I am sitting in a taxi in Sydney on my way to spend a day coaching with a client here. It is a beautiful day, I am really excited, it’s a great company to work with and today, we are going to work on a couple of things. The issues that he has been having are mostly based around getting the best out of his team and he had me thinking about the three things that we are going to focus on and these are the three things that you should be focusing on in your business.
What is it that your team are really looking for?
When people are working, they are looking for three very simple things. First, they are looking for a sense of belonging. They want to know that they are part of something that’s bigger than them. This may be that’s the camaraderie within the office or something that they do in the business or outside of the business It could be a community engagement, whatever it may be, they are looking for something which is something that they can identify with, belong to and helps them to feel that they are playing a bigger part. They want to feel that they are their own piece in the overall jigsaw puzzle. It’s one of the mistakes that we often make, we only get our team members to understand what part they play. If we look at business as a jigsaw puzzle, they may understand the part they play, they may understand where it fits in but we never really fit the lid of the box over and show them the whole picture on the front. So, that’s the number one thing – a sense of belonging, the sense of belonging to something which is bigger than them.
Number two is a sense of purpose. When they come into work, they need to know that there is a reason for them being there. So, we need to answer that age long question of why am I here? Your team is looking to hear from you a sense of purpose – what it is that they are doing there, why it is that they are there and what purpose they serve.
Finally, they are looking for certainty. So, that’s certainty in the role that they perform, certainty in the way that the business is run and certainty in the way that you deal with them. If you can tick the three boxes on all those things; the sense of belonging, a sense of purpose and a sense of certainty, you will be well on your way to having a great team around you. One that will probably stay with you for an extended period of time.
