I am sitting in a taxi in Sydney on my way to spend a day coaching with a client here in Sydney. It’s a beautiful day and I am really excited, this is a great company to work with and today we are going to work on a couple of things. The issues that he has been having is mostly around getting the best out of his team and he had me thinking about the three things that we are going to focus on and these are the three things that you should be focusing on in your business.
What is it that your team are really looking for?
When people are working they are looking for three very simple things. First of all, they are looking for a sense of belonging. They want to know that they are part of something that’s bigger than them whether that’s the camaraderie within the office, whether that’s something that you do in your business or outside of the business, whether it’s a community engagement, whatever it may be, they are looking for something which they can identify with and belong to. Something to help them understand that they are playing a bigger part and feel they are their own piece in this overall jigsaw puzzle. I think it’s one of the mistakes that we often make, we only get our team members to understand what part they play. If we are looking at business as a jigsaw puzzle, they understand the part they play, they understand where it fits in but we never really fit the lid of the box over and show them the whole picture on the front of the box. So, that’s the number one thing, a sense of belonging and the sense of belonging to something which is bigger than them.
Number two is the sense of purpose. When they come into work, they need to know that there is a reason for them being there. So, we need to answer that age long question of why am I here? Your team is actually looking to hear from you to give them a sense of purpose, what it is that they are doing there, why it is that they are there and what purpose do they serve?
Finally, they are looking for certainty. So, that’s certainty in the role that they perform, certainty in the way the business is run and certainty in the way that you deal with them as well. If you can tick the three boxes on those things that’s the sense of belonging, a sense of purpose and a sense of certainty. You will be well on your way to having a great team around you and one that will probably stay with you for an extended period of time. I am off now to take care of those three points in this business in Sydney. I am excited about it and am looking forward to a great outcome.
