I was sitting on the tarmac at Brisbane airport about to take off for a day of coaching in Sydney. It was 7.30 in the morning. I’d had a great start to the day, a chance to get some writing done, a relatively easy drive to the airport with some quality thinking time, smashed out a bunch of emails and reviewed a client’s presentation for his address to his team. All in all, a great start to a day I was looking forward to. As we were about to push back from the gate, the Captain came over the intercom to say he had discovered some minor technical problems and was having the engineers take a look at them. He added that it would delay the flight briefly. I turned to my neighbour and commented that I’d rather they found the technical problem when we were on the ground than when we were 30,000 feet in the air!
It got me thinking about business and how often I have seen issues arise in a business, which could have been identified easily if only the owner had taken the time to plan ahead, to dedicate time in their week to work on the business. Instead, business owners often become so busy running their business that they fail to check for potential technical problems whilst still on the ground and end up blindsided at the business equivalent of 30,000 feet!
It may be a logistic issue, an equipment issue or an unhappy key team member or major client, even though they have been trying to tell you for months about their discontent. In our PRESET Your Business program we teach business owners to take the time to look critically at their performance and to dedicate time to work on their business consistently. By doing so they discover the potential technical problems on the ground and, just like the Captain of my flight, they get the engineers to resolve it before it becomes a major mid-flight incident.
