Things are often very hectic at Red Monkey Coaching at this time of year. I’m certainly not complaining mind you, I would much rather be hectic than not, but it does raise some interesting planning questions.
I always talk to my clients at the beginning of the calendar year about their plans for the year ahead. I encourage them to set some goals and decide on some specific things they want to achieve in their business. Of course, this focus needs to be both internal and external. What do they want to achieve by way of growth, expansion, new products and services? Also, what do they hope to achieve by way of internal growth? I ask them to look at team development – investing time into their people – so that they can have the very best team, delivering the very best service.
Often the focus on the internal – the team development, skills upgrading and service standards, takes a back seat in the first half of the year. As Christmas approaches it takes on some magical and mysterious deadline and suddenly the internal tasks we spoke about at the start of the year become an urgent focus. The positive is that there is focus on their team, the negative is that if it had been delivered much earlier in the year then they may have reaped the rewards for a longer period of time.
So, now Christmas has passed, think about your team. How much time and money do you invest in your team, in helping them to be their best and to deliver on the grand plans that you have for your business? Give serious consideration to kicking the year off with dedicating some resources to your team and reap the rewards all year long.
Whether you engage someone to help you with a team development session or a retreat or even if you conduct some simple in-house sessions. Take the time to do something constructive for your team! Whenever business owners talk to me about the cost, in time and money, of conducting such sessions and ask, “What if we spend this and they leave?” I always say, “What if you don’t and they stay?”
Do yourself and your business a favour, take the time to plan for the year but don’t forget to dedicate some time for those dearest to you.
